Congratulations to Christophe Stibio who is a finalist in the Wynne Prize 2022 held at the Art Gallery of NSW.
Understanding LAKE MUNGO, 6:10AM is understanding Lake Mungo itself – seemingly rough but soft and fragile; ever-changing in its multiplicity; apparently static yet so mobile.
The strips of shredded classified documents on the painting’s surface symbolise the constant shifts and transformations that occur on the dry lakebed. They also serve as a metaphor, exploring the need for circular-economy practices. The recycling of the strips, painted in blue, echoes the land’s renewal.
Above all, this work is a contemplation of the blue haze that fills the early morning at Lake Mungo. It is so superbly terrifying in its beauty that the right hemisphere of the brain shuts down. And then the horizon vanishes.
