ARTIST STATEMENT

As one traverses our iconic Punt Road, the destination is often the focus. But have you ever walked past a lemon scented gum in the rain, when the warmth of a summer storm has infused the air with a gift of eucalyptus? Well that destination is important as well. With this public artwork, I was offered the opportunity of create one of these moments, available to anyone ready to pause and take a breath in.

‘Chicane’, the title of the façade artwork, is inspired by two special trees. The base of the artwork draws inspiration from a tree trunk that branches into two forms, echoing female and male spirits. I have drawn a contour to this form, as I’m not painting a tree, I’m creating a reference to nature; “One eye sees, the other feels.” - Paul Klee.

Hovering at the top of the building are forms of another tree…a dead tree. The branches are turned upside down and given a new context, creating a link to the circularity of rising and falling in life. Inspiration for me isn’t necessarily something that is tangible, aside from nature and music, there is always an infusion of instinctive mark making. The balconies capture those moments in the flow of the lines and the rhythm of the dots.

As in nature, everything is linked to a sense of connection – it’s essential that we don’t lose the roots of our existence amidst the segregation of nature and humanity. I hope the building can be secured in the roots of nature and be intertwined with humanity’s relationship to our environment.
