Mighty congratulations to Matthew Couper, who has been awarded an artist residency program with UAP (Urban Art Projects). Commencing in mid May, Matthew will initially exhibit with MAGMA, before beginning the residency in the Brisbane based studio and foundry/factory.
UAP is a global company that collaborates with artists, architects, designers and developers to bring uncommon creativity to the public realm. UAP’s residency initiative aims to give artists the resources and space to explore and extend their practice using UAP's cutting-edge design and manufacturing studios whilst fostering relationships and collaborations within their teams.
Couper will be using his time at the residency to explore translations of his large format paintings into sculptural outcomes. His oscillating compositions of nailed-together lumber, ropes, dripping eyeballs and billowing pipe smoke will review against tangible forms of wood, aluminium, glass, bronze, gold-leaf and the architectural protection technique of yakisugi. Similarly to Couper’s make-shift constructions found in his paintings, his investigations in collaboration with UAP, will seek to implement various materials and processes to stretch and translate his existing practice into both private and public art outcomes.
Congratulations Matthew!
